Richard T. Greener's Reconstruction Republic:
The Philosophical Writings of Richard T. Greener
Norah Dixon
Research Mentor: Dr. Christian Anderson
We aim to study the philosophical writings of Richard T. Greener, a professor of philosophy and the first African American professor at the University of South Carolina from 1873 to 1877. Greener’s philosophical writings and essays are arguably in league with the works of W.E.B DuBois, Booker T. Washington, Frederick Douglass, and several more notable intellectuals of the 19th century. However, unlike DuBois, Douglass, and Washington, Greener’s works are not as heavily researched or well-known. Our book would bring awareness to Greener’s works as well as make his writings more accessible to the general public, students, and scholars alike.
